Ophir RFC is excited to introduce Owen Smith as our new Club Community Rugby Officer (CCRO).
Owen’s appointment marks a significant step forward in promoting youth participation and community engagement in rugby.
With a strong dedication to developing the next generation of players, Owen’s experience and enthusiasm are a perfect match for the role.
Q&A with Owen
To get to know Owen better, we asked him a few questions:
1. What inspired you to get involved in rugby, and how did your journey in the sport begin?
When I was younger, I came across a poster for Ophir RFC, and that moment sparked my interest in the sport.
It was exciting to see an opportunity so close to home where I could get involved, make new friends, and learn new skills.
2. Could you share a bit about your background with Ophir?
I’ve been involved with Ophir RFC for many years, moving through different stages of growth and development.
I started in the minis, where I first learned the basic skills and values of rugby - teamwork, respect, and resilience.
Although there were times I took breaks from rugby, I always found my way back to Ophir, and now I play in the senior team. The club has been a steady part of my life, shaping who I am both on and off the field.
3. What drew you to this position as the new CCRO rugby officer at our club?
Taking on the role of CCRO feels like a natural step in my journey with Ophir RFC. It’s an exciting opportunity to combine my passion for the sport with my desire to give back to the club that’s given me so much over the years.
I also see this as a chance to grow my skills in community outreach and youth development, which will be valuable for my future career.
But most importantly, I want to play an active role in inspiring a new generation to fall in love with rugby, just as I did.
4. What are your main goals for the club and the community in your role?
My main goals revolve around growth and connection. I want to see more young people not just trying out rugby but staying committed and enjoying it long-term.
This means creating an environment that is welcoming, fun, and supportive for players of all abilities.
I also want to strengthen the ties between Ophir RFC and local schools, showing students the benefits of joining our club and making it easier for them to get involved.
5. What do you hope young people gain from their experience here?
I hope that young people walk away from their time at Ophir RFC with more than just skills on the pitch.
While developing rugby techniques and physical fitness are important, my real wish is that they gain confidence, teamwork abilities, and resilience that will benefit them throughout their lives.
6. How do you plan to engage with the wider community and promote rugby locally?
My primary strategy is to reach out to as many schools as possible to introduce students to rugby.
By hosting workshops, demonstrations, and school sessions, I hope to show that rugby is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
I’ll also look for opportunities to collaborate with community groups and organise fun events like open Blitz days and rugby camps.
The aim is to create an inviting space where young people and their families can learn about the sport, join in, and feel like part of the club.
7. Outside of rugby, do you have any hobbies or interests that you’re passionate about?
Outside of rugby, my biggest hobby is going to the gym. Fitness has always been important to me, not just for maintaining my performance on the rugby field but for my overall well-being.
It’s a space where I can push myself, set personal goals, and unwind. Apart from that, I enjoy spending time with friends and staying active through other sports when I get the chance.
8. If you could challenge any famous rugby player (past or present) to a one-on-one match, who would it be?
If I could challenge any rugby player to a one-on-one match, it would have to be RG Snyman. He’s an exceptional player known for his physical prowess and unique skills, like his one-handed line-out catches.
Competing against someone like him would be a fantastic experience - not just for the thrill of facing a top-level player but for the opportunity to learn from him firsthand.
Plus, his sheer presence would be both intimidating and inspiring, making it a memorable challenge!
Watch out for Owen
Owen’s vision and drive to nurture young talent make him an outstanding addition to Ophir RFC.
We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our youth programmes and the wider community.
Keep an eye out for him at training sessions and upcoming events!
